Behind the Camera

One common question I am asked is, “Why did you become a photographer?”

There are several answers to this question. The simplest of those answers is this: I prefer to be behind a camera rather than in front of it.

Despite my preference for being behind the camera, here is a picture of me taken by Dave Erickson.

Anniversary Portraits

This is a follow up to the post congratulating Mel and Jeremy on their 1-year wedding anniversary. And it’s all about Anniversary Portraits!

I’ll admit…Anniversary Portraits are basically the same as the Engagement Portraits, but the idea is slightly different.

Engagement Portraits are meant to celebrate your time together prior to marriage, your engagement, and the images from the sessions are often used to for invitations or various other related items. Anniversary Portraits are meant to celebrate the time you’ve spent married be it six months, six years, or more. Similar to Engagement Portraits but unlike Family Portraits, the Anniversary Portrait session is aimed at the couple. Recapture your youthful exuberance and joyful love for each other by recreating the excitement of your engagement.

Anniversary Portrait sessions start at just $175. Click here for more information.

Here’s another image from Mel and Jeremy’s session:

congrats!

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Mel and Jeremy on their 1-year wedding anniversary!

happy 1 year anniversary!

Unable to do an Engagement Portraits session prior to marriage but wanting similarly styled images, Mel and Jeremy asked me what I could do for them. Having not seen such a package offered elsewhere, I crafted the “Anniversary Portraits” session.

Jewelry Photography

In an effort to expand my portfolio and service offerings, I took to the task of photographing jewelry.

As a guy, I have no jewelry beyond my ring and a small chain I wear pretty frequently.

Much to my surprise, photographing jewelry is significantly more diffuclt than it might seem. Lighting is of paramount importance and reflections are a nightmare if uncontrolled. I’ll admit that I thought it would be much easier, but as I began using different techniques within my lightbox, the difficulty of accurately capturing each piece of jewelry became increasingly evident. In composing the photos, I used anywhere from 1-5 lighting elements, a handful of reflectors, fabric, tape, paper, and more. One of the most nerve-racking elements was getting the jewelry to stop swaying when hanging in the lightbox. Using what little patience I have, I steadied each item and photographed them.

A special thanks goes out to my mother and girlfriend for providing the jewelry.

What is it? April 15, 2011 Answer

I previously asked, what is this image:

backpack bottom

It’s the bottom of one of my backpacks. Some of the black rubber dots have fallen off, as you can tell.

Good luck guessing next time!
